About Caykur Tea
Çaykur Tea is Turkey’s biggest state owned tea cooperative, officially formed in 1983, its roots go back to early 1900’s. Caykur Tea produces more than half of all Turkish tea consumed in Turkey, in the port city of Rize in northeastern Turkey. Recently, the producer has made a move towards organic farming standards and have set up a state of the art manufacturing plant in Hemşin region and has since introduced the Organic Hemşin Black Tea variety to their product line up.
About Turkish Tea
Turkish tea, known as “çay“, pronounced Chai, is a type of tea made from loose black tea leaves, in a stacked kettle apparatus called “çaydanlık“. This popular tea is brewed slowly and often diluted to taste with hot water as the long and slow brewing process makes the tea very strong. Served in small traditional glasses with matching small plates and cutlery, Turkish tea is enjoyed without milk. Turkey is the biggest consumer of tea in the world with more than 7.5kg’s of tea consumed per capita according to 2014 figures. Most popular varieties are Rize Tea, Ceylon and Bergamot/Earl Grey.
